B&B Owner Uses Peepholes to Spy on Guests

A B&B owner from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, has admitted using peepholes to spy on his guests having sex and make audio recordings, the Daily Mail has reported.

Paul Williams, 59, was discovered when a 16-year-old student staying at his bed and breakfast noticed one of the safety posters on the wall moving around. Upon investigating, her boyfriend discovered a small hole providing a direct view of the bed. Opening the door, he saw the B&B owner in a dressing gown moving off down the corridor.

When told, the two other couples staying there also found holes in their rooms. The guests had been drinking and were unable to drive to another bed and breakfast, but in the morning they all requested a refund and called the police.

Audio equipment was found in an adjoining room with recordings of what “sounded like people having sexual intercourse”, the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court heard. The guests were said to have been left feeling “sick and horrified”.

When arrested, Williams had claimed he had drilled the holes to ensure that residents did not leave without paying and to check that they were not taking drugs on his premises. Later, he pleaded guilty to charges of voyeurism and observing a private act for his own sexual gratification.

What do you think? Are guests put off staying in B&Bs because of incidents like this or do they know such cases are isolated incidents which could occur in any kind of hotel?
