Hotels and guesthouses have traditionally not been friends of our four-legged companions, what with the noise, the excess hair and – dare I say it? – the smell that often comes along with them.

So now bed and breakfasts in the US have identified a niche market in a struggling economy by opening their doors to man’s best friend, according to a spokesperson for the California Association of Bed and Breakfast Inns.

The LA Times have stated that the number of pet-friendly B&Bs in America is growing steadily. Mary White of even mentions some bed and breakfasts offering ‘special treats and spa packages’ for pets, including the Dog Resort & Wellness Centre in Coachella Valley, which has a doggy lounge, a doggy park and even a pool where you can swim with your dog – all leash-free.

The results of a survey we took last year suggests that many non pet owners would be unhappy sharing their holiday with another guest’s dog or cat, so perhaps B&Bs dedicated specifically to animals and their humans is the way forward?
