‘Poofters Welcome’ in the New Forest

A Hampshire hotelier was accused of causing offence recently after putting up a sign outside his hotel that read ‘Poofters Welcome Here’.

The sign comes after a gay couple were awarded £3,600 in damages last month, after being refused a double room at a B&B in Cornwall.

The Penny Farthing Hotel in Lyndhurst describes itself on its website as being a gay-friendly hotel, but it is the use of the word ‘poofter’ which is the cause of the controversy in this case.

Lyndhurst Parish Council Chairman Mark Rolle expressed concerns that ‘the realms of decency were overstepped’, and that Lyndhurst would be ‘branded a village of idiots’, and the police attended the property following complaints about the sign.

Mike Saqui, the owner of the Penny Farthing, denies wishing to cause offence and claims that the sign is just a bit of light-hearted fun.

However, this is not the first time Mr. Saqui has come under fire for his sense of humour. Last month the sign read, ‘There’s more than one gay in the village’, a reference to Little Britain character Daffyd Thomas, and two years ago there was controversy when the businessman wrote ‘Big Brother can seriously damage your health’ shortly after the death of cancer victim and ex-contestant Jade Goody.

The sign remains outside the Penny Farthing Hotel, but the slogan has since been changed.
