Hazelmary and Peter Bull from Cornwall, whose defence is being financed by The Christian Institute, make the following statement on their website ‘We have few rules but please note that out of a deep regard for marriage we prefer to let double accommodation to heterosexual married couples only.’

When gay partners Martyn Hall and Steven Preddy arrived to make use of the double room they had booked, they were told that their reservation could not be honoured and were offered two single rooms instead. The couple, whose case is being funded by the Equality and Human Rights Commission,  reported the incident to the police and are now attempting to claim up to £5,000 in damages.

Mrs Bull stated, ‘I have had people clearly involved in affairs and under-age people who have tried to book in here for sex, and I have refused them the same as I refused these gentleman because I won’t be a party to anything which is an affront to my faith under my roof.’ She even asked her brother and his female partner to sleep in separate rooms when staying at her hotel.

What do you think about this issue? Should B&Bs, as private homes, have the right to choose who stays under their roof, or do you agree with the couple’s decision to report the incident to the police? Do you think the couple were fairly warned by the statement on the B&B’s website, or do you think the Bulls were breaking the law by having this policy?
