This October is a celebration of the arts, with a wide variety of festivals and cultural events taking place across the globe. From cinema to theatre, from jazz to opera, here are a few of our favourite October world events – have a read then leave us a message to let us know what you’ll be up to this month.

4th September-18th February: Gran Teatre de Liceu Opera Season, Barcelona

 Gran Teatre de Liceu Opera Season The beautiful interior of the Gran Teatre de Liceu is a must-see for anyone visiting Barcelona, and what better time than in the autumn, when the eagerly awaited opera season begins. Lasting for several months, this year’s programme boasts productions of Bizet’s Carmen and Cosi FUN tutte, an adaptation of Mozart’s famous work.

13th – 28th October: BFI London Film Festival

 BFI London Film FestivalCreated in 1956 with the aim of giving the general British public access to films they might not ordinarily get to see, the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival is a celebration of independent and award-winning cinema. Some of this year’s highlights this year include Black Swan, Pandora’s Box and Chongqing Blues, but you’d better book soon – some screenings are already sold out.

15th – 30th October: 48th Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s

Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queens Started in the 1960s at the Queens University Campus by a young graduate, the Belfast Festival has grown up to become the second largest arts festival in the UK, and has played host to such celebrated names as Jimi Hendrix, Laurence Olivier, the Moscow State Ballet and Billy Connolly. Each year the line up contains something for everyone, with a huge variety of theatre, dance, opera, film and music. This autumn, Michael Palin, the Ulster Orchestra and Alan Bennett are all coming to Belfast.

22nd – 25th October: Guinness Cork Jazz Festival

Guinness Cork Jazz FestivalMeanwhile, festival goers in Cork will be moving to a syncopated beat as the 32nd Guinness Cork Jazz Festival takes over the city. Musical acts including Andreas Varady, Steve Winwood and the Brand New Heavies will be playing in venues all around Cork, where jazz legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Peterson once performed.

Other festivals taking place in Ireland this October include the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival and the Wexford Opera Festival.
