Everyone likes to show off from time to time, especially when it comes to holidays. So what better way to impress your friends than by bringing back photos of your stay in a genuine castle? Whether you’re a history buff or are just looking to treat your partner to some fairytale-style romance, will have a castle bed and breakfast for you.

Barberstown Castle in Straffan, Ireland

Barberstown Castle in Straffan, IrelandJust half an hour outside central Dublin yet surrounded by countryside is Barberstown Castle, an elegant country house hotel providing impeccable service and unbeatable luxury.

The thirteenth-century fortress was originally built to protect the neighbouring village of Straffan; later Elizabethan and Victorian additions offer a record of different periods of Irish history. The walls of the castle visibly slope inwards, a defensive tactic which prevented the enemy from getting out of range by closing up to the building. Surprisingly, rooms on the upper floors are larger than those on the ground floor, as the walls are thinner at the top.

Opened to the public as a hotel in 1971, every one of the unique guestrooms has been named after one of Barberstown Castle’s previous owners, from original owner Nicholas Barby in 1288 to music legend Eric Clapton in 1979. Ideal for weddings, conferences or a weekend getaway, the castle boasts twenty acres of parkland as well as elegant dining rooms and cosy tea rooms with open fires.

Guests at the castle can try their hand at a number of country pursuits, including fishing, archery, horse riding and clay pigeon shooting, or alternatively play a round of golf at the Ryder Cup 2006 championship course just a kilometre away.
