Carcassonne in FranceThe ancient fortified town of Carcassonne has long been a favourite with visitors to the idyllic south of France. All turrets and towers, the old walled city sits like a fairytale castle overlooking the River Aude.

Key attractions include the 17th-century château, which was once the residence of the viscounts of Carcassonne and the impressive Basilica of Saint Nazaire, although you can while away many an hour wandering the medieval streets of the Ville Basse and marvelling at the beautifully preserved architecture. The Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is also nearby.

Carcassonne has a full calendar of events throughout the summer. Highlights include:

  • Carcassonne Jazz Week (beginning of April)
  • Carcassonne Festival (end of June to mid-August): An extensive programme of music, dance and theatre. This year sees a whole host of big name acts such as Bob Dylan, Jamiroquai, Simple Minds, The Cranberries, Toulouse Chamber Choir and the Prague Philharmonic.
  • Embrasement de la Cité Médiévale (July 14th): On one night every year the city lights up torchlight parades, illuminations and a huge firework display on the banks of the Aude River.
  • Spanish Week (last week of August): A week-long celebration of the music, dance and food of Spain.
