Running a Bed and Breakfast – the Highs and the Lows

We asked B&B owners on Twitter what the best and worst things about running a Bed and Breakfast are. Here’s what they said…

@peterpastry Worst paperwork and legislation. Best and far outweighing worst Meeting different people and making them smile.

@agaqueen The best? Wowing the punters with my food! The worst? Cleaning the loos!

@HerefordHoliday When they say “I never knew sausages could taste so good”

@livilodge Best is Guests (usually) worst is the hours!

@leperchoir For us Best – meeting such great new people – Worst – cleaning bathrooms etc !!

@fiberwoman15 Best thing: Meeting new people! Worst thing: When people aren’t traveling as much, like in winter!

@theoldhen The best: Meeting new friends, repeat guests who call u family, when breakfast turns out heavenly & seeing guests leave totally refreshed! The worst: Hair, taste of Comet & Lysol, and breakfast catastrophies! Lol

So, a number of different ‘worsts’, but the best is almost unanimously meeting and getting to know the guests. That and preparing amazing breakfasts…

If you’re a B&B owner and want to share your best and worst things about running a bed and breakfast, or if you’re a B&B fan who can tell us what the best things about staying in a B&B are, we’d love to hear from you. Leave us a comment below, or find us on Twitter or Facebook.

Best: Guests telling us it’s better in real life than on the website.

Worst: Getting up on day 64 after 63 straight days of guests and making something creative for breakfast!

Tthe Best – Sharing the love of the land, the people, the food, and the area with guests. Getting to know guests so that they become friends and return to visit again and again. Having the privilege of living in a grand old home and becoming part of it’s history.
The Worst – Most of your sweaters now have bleach stains on the sleeves.

Best – We spent decades travelling & meeting interesting people – now we are too busy with holiday homes, we don’t have to travel to meet them they come to us.
Worst -Being so enthusiastic about providing & recommending local produce, I highlighted the local pork butcher for his bacon to 4 Israeli guests.
