Unusual Travel Gift Ideas

Kathryn O’Shea Evans compiled a list of the weirdest travel gift ideas from around the world; some stylish, some innovative, some just downright bizarre, such as…
  1. …The Travel Bidet! Pocket-sized and battery-operated! If you don’t quite understand the appeal of bidets to start with, this probably isn’t for you, but who knows – the Europeans may fall head over heels for it!
  2. Metal-detecting sandals. The stylish accessory for beachcombers, although the tanline you get from the battery pack strapped to your calf may damage your street cred…
  3. Touchscreen Cell Phone Watch. Undoubtedly one for the boys, this miniature tri-band mobile phone will work anywhere in the world, as long as you don’t mind talking into your wrist.
  4. Self-propelled suitcase. This one could actually catch on. Don’t struggle up hills with heavy luggage – let the suitcase do the work. Wherever you go, tiny electric motors in its wheels means that your suitcase will trundle along behind you, at speeds of up to 3 miles an hour.
  5. Banana protector. There’s nothing worse than a bruised banana. Well, that may not be quite true, but this is still a pretty handy, and remarkably simple, invention. Your banana’s own personal lunch box, and for less than a fiver too!
  6. Movie-screen sunglasses. Just plug in your iPod and sit back while your movie of choice plays in front of your eyes. “Look fashionable while enjoying the big-screen movie experience” is the manufacturers’ claim. As long as you’re not indoors, in which case you might look a bit silly wearing sunglasses.
  7. Disinfection scanner. Hold this portable UV light over your hotel bed for 10 seconds and kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. Perfect for…well, maybe you know someone.
  8. Giant Swiss Army Knife. Not exactly pocket-size, but undeniably useful, this extension of the classic Swiss Army Knife has 87 gadgets, meaning that you’re unlikely to ever need anything else, ever again. Ever.
  9. Personal Seat Protector. Whoever got no. 7 for Christmas, give them this for their birthday. Slipping over your train or plane seat, this cover protects you from the dirt and grime you know your fellow travelers are covered in.
